AI "misinterprets" the news - Digital assistants "distort" content in 45% of cases
Artificial intelligence assistants, which are now the main source of information for many people, often misinterpret or distort news content, regardless of the language, country or platform used, new research has found. The study was coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and led by the BBC.
The research involved 22 public service media (PSM) organizations from 18 countries, working in 14 different languages. The study identified systemic problems in four of the main artificial intelligence tools.
Professional journalists from participating organizations evaluated over 3,000 responses received from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity, based on several criteria: accuracy, sources, separation of opinion from fact, and provision of context. The results showed that 45 percent of the AI responses had at least one serious problem.
In 31 percent of cases, serious problems with missing sources or incorrect references were identified, while 20 percent contained major inaccuracies, including fabricated details or outdated information.
Gemini performed the worst, having serious problems in 76 percent of responses, more than double the rate of other assistants, largely due to a lack of accurate resources, the statement said.
Artificial intelligence assistants are increasingly replacing search engines for many users. Reuters’ Digital News Report 2025 shows that 7 percent of online news readers now use such assistants to get information, while this figure rises to 15 percent among young people under 25. “This study conclusively shows that these problems are not isolated cases. They are systemic, cross-border and multilingual, and we believe that this threatens public trust. When people no longer know what to believe, they end up believing nothing,” the study authors said.
