Is the EU ready to disconnect from Russian gas? - The bloc buys more than half

The European Union purchased more than half of Russia's total liquefied natural gas exports (51%) between December 2022 and the end of July 2025. This data raises questions about statements by European officials that they will completely stop importing Russian LNG by the end of 2027.

The largest importers of liquefied natural gas in the EU are France, Spain and the Netherlands. According to the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air, the second largest buyer in this period was China with 21% of the total, while in third place was Japan with 18%.

Moreover, three years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the European Union still remains the largest buyer of Russian gas through pipelines, with a share of 36%.

In the first half of 2025, the value of Russian LNG exports to the EU increased from 3.47 billion euros to 4.48 billion euros, indicating that the policy to reduce dependence continues to lag behind the pace imposed by economic reality, according to CNN.

The problem is not only political, but also infrastructural. Many countries do not have enough terminals and pipelines to switch quickly to other sources of supply.

To achieve energy independence, the European Union will need to invest more in infrastructure and accelerate the transition to alternative sources.
