"Ukraine needs security guarantees" - Zelensky repeats demands after

Following the Oval Office clash between United States President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the latter has repeated demands for security guarantees in order to achieve a peace agreement with Russia.

Trump accused Zelenskyy of being ungrateful to the United States. The US president also commented on the chaotic meeting, which ended abruptly after White House officials reportedly asked Zelenskyy to leave. According to Trump, the Ukrainian leader was never serious about making peace or ending the war.

The White House chief of staff has sought to dramatically reshape U.S. foreign policy since returning to power, including Washington's stance on Ukraine. He has been critical of the war and threatened to end support for Kiev even before taking office.

Tensions rose last week, with Zelenskyy accusing Trump of living in a "disinformation space" created by Russia, while the American called the Ukrainian leader a dictator.

The meeting was seen by many as an opportunity to calm tensions and bring stability to an increasingly worrying global security situation, but it failed to achieve any of this.

Zelenskyy described the conflict with Trump as "not good for either side."

"I am very grateful to the Americans for all your support. You did a lot. I am grateful to President Trump and the bipartisan support of Congress. You helped us a lot from the very beginning during the three years of occupation and helped us survive," Zelenskyy said.

He rejected suggestions that Kiev does not want to secure a peace agreement and also urged Trump to reconsider his stance and be on the right side, standing by Ukrainians as they fight for Western values, unity and security.

Zelenskyy insists that an end to the suffering of Ukrainians must come with guarantees to prevent it from happening again. He also noted that the minerals deal, which was on the meeting's agenda, would be the first step towards obtaining the security guarantees that Kiev considers necessary.

According to the Ukrainian leader, Trump should understand that Ukraine has reason to doubt the Kremlin's credibility, having previously violated a 2019 peace agreement signed between him, then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine cannot change its stance towards Russia and must secure a new peace agreement that is not like the one in 2019.
