EU, 100 billion euros for decarbonizing industry - Plan includes reducing energy bills for households and firms
The European Commission will make €100 billion available to support EU clean manufacturing, as part of the Clean Industrial Deal.
The agreement is a key pillar of the competition plan, designed to support energy-intensive industries that face high costs and heavy bureaucracy.
The Commission plans to launch, together with the European Investment Bank, guarantee schemes to ease the costs of long-term renewable energy contracts, as well as to support grid producers. The Clean Industrial Deal aims to provide the means for reindustrialisation in parallel with faster decarbonisation, supporting competitiveness and resilience.
Another important pillar is the Affordable Energy Action Plan. This is a set of short-term measures to reduce energy costs, complete the Energy Union, attract investment and better prepare for potential energy crises. Outlining the proposal, the European Commission estimated the potential annual savings for households and companies at €260 billion by 2040.
Greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector fell by almost 10% last year while energy consumption rose by 1%, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted. "We are on track to achieve the 55% emissions reduction target for 2030," she added.
"Europe is home to 30% of all innovative companies in electrolyser technologies, 20% in carbon capture and storage and 40% in wind technology and heat pumps. This is the sector where we can really beat global competition," von der Leyen stressed.
