Trump "targets" Mexico/ 30% tariff on imports from neighboring

United States President Donald Trump is preparing to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico starting August 1. He has accused the country of not doing enough to stop the flow of migrants and fentanyl.

Mexico, in particular, is one of the U.S.’s largest trading partners, accounting for 15.8% of total trade. The United States imported more than $475 billion worth of Mexican products in 2023, a figure that has nearly doubled over the past decade, according to the data. U.S. exports to Mexico also accounted for more than $322 billion.

The largest sector to be affected by the new tariffs includes automobiles and their parts, which accounted for $129 billion in imports in 2023.

The measures are expected to put pressure on the profits of major American automakers that have factories in Mexico, such as General Motors, by raising prices for American consumers.

Other larger categories that will be affected include electrical machinery and a wide range of parts and equipment, such as engines, generators and fuels.

Alcoholic beverages such as tequila and beer also make up a significant portion of U.S. imports, totaling almost $12 billion.

The United States is also dependent on Mexican agricultural products and goods such as sugar, flour, meat, and fresh fruits and vegetables, including avocados.
