Samsung partners with Tesla/ $16.5 billion chip supply deal

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company has signed a $16.5 billion chip supply deal with Samsung Electronics. The partnership could provide a major boost to the South Korean firm's chip production.

Musk was likely referring to Samsung's facility under construction in Taylor, Texas. The deal could breathe new life into the project, which has been delayed as the company has struggled to secure high-profile customers.

"Samsung has agreed to let Tesla help maximize production efficiency. This is a turning point and I will personally help accelerate the pace of progress. The factory is located not far from my home," Musk added.

While a specific timeline for the AI6 chip was not revealed, Musk has previously said that production of the next-generation A15 chip will begin in late 2026, implying that AI6 could follow later.

Samsung currently manufactures Tesla's A14 chips, used in its self-driving system (FSD). Meanwhile, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will manufacture the upcoming AI5 models, initially in Taiwan and later in Arizona, according to Musk.

The Korean tech giant initially disclosed the $16.5 billion supply deal without naming Tesla, citing the customer's request for confidentiality. The contract will run until the end of 2033.

It remains unclear whether the deal is related to trade talks between the US and South Korea. Seoul is seeking chip and shipbuilding partnerships with Washington as it works to stave off potential 25% US tariffs.
