Trump proposes lowering fuel standards - The measure slows the expansion of electric cars, favors manufacturers

President Donald Trump proposed drastically reducing the fuel economy standards that former President Joe Biden had finalized last year, in an effort to make it easier for automakers to sell gasoline-powered cars.
Trump's move is intended to undo one of Biden's key climate initiatives, which had sought to encourage the purchase of more electric vehicles. "People want gas cars," Trump said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed lowering fuel economy requirements for models from 2022 to 2031, requiring an average of 14.7 km per liter by 2031 — much lower than the previous standard of 21.4 km per liter.
The administration is proposing to revise the 2022 standards downward and then increase them by just 0.25% to 0.5% per year through 2031. Three years ago, under Biden, the administration had increased fuel efficiency standards by 8% per year for 2024-2025 models and by 10% for 2026.
Biden's rules pushed companies to produce more electric cars, but did not require them to immediately stop producing gasoline cars.
According to estimates, the new regulation would reduce the initial costs of vehicles by about $930, but would increase fuel consumption by about 378.5 billion liters by 2050. This would cost Americans up to an additional $185 billion in fuel, as well as increase CO₂ emissions by about 5%.
Lowering standards for past years will make requirements much easier for automakers, as they would save $35 billion by 2031.
The administration added that the increase in vehicle emissions in 2035 under the new proposal would be equivalent to the annual emissions of 7.7 million vehicles under Biden's rules.
Earlier this year, Trump signed a law that ended fines for violating fuel economy standards, and manufacturers will not face penalties starting with the 2022 model year.
