Trump Wants Iran's Oil - May Seize Export Hub, Kharg Island

US President Donald Trump said he could "take Iran's oil" and seize the export hub, Kharg Island, as hostilities in the Middle East continue for a fifth week.
Trump told the Financial Times that his "preference would be to take the oil," comparing it to the US military operation in Venezuela earlier this year, where the US took control of the Latin American country's oil industry after the capture of its leader Nicolás Maduro.
The Trump administration has considered sending ground forces to Kharg Island, with one source warning that such an operation would be “very dangerous.” Tehran has the ability to reach the island with missiles and drones.
“Maybe we get Kharg Island, maybe we don’t. We have a lot of options,” Trump said. “That would also mean we would have to stay there [on Kharg Island] for a while.”
Trump's comments come at a time when the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran is escalating across the region, raising risks to energy and infrastructure, and sending crude oil prices soaring.
Trump said last week that Iranian negotiators were “begging” the US to make a deal to end the war, although Iran has denied any direct interaction with the US. In his interview with the FT, Trump said that indirect talks between the US and Iran through Pakistani “emissaries” were progressing well.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Joint Base Andrews on Sunday evening that the two sides had had "very good meetings, both directly and indirectly."
The US sent Iran a 15-point peace plan, including a complete halt to Iran's nuclear program and severe restrictions on the scope and size of its missile arsenal. Tehran has publicly rejected the offer and has presented its own conditions.
