Trump advances tax bill - Measure expected to increase US debt by $3.8 trillion
Donald Trump's tax and spending bill has passed a major hurdle in the House of Representatives, despite divisions among Republicans. The new measure risks adding $3.8 trillion to the US debt.
US President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill has cleared a key hurdle. The House of Representatives voted roughly along party lines to begin a debate that would lead to a vote on approval.
The bill would extend tax cuts signed by Trump in 2017 and create new tax breaks. It would also end green energy subsidies and increase spending on the military and immigration enforcement.
The proposed legislation, which Trump called "a big, beautiful bill," would also add $3.8 trillion to the $36.2 trillion U.S. debt burden over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Lawmakers voted 217-212 and began a debate on the legislation during the session. They must vote again to approve the measure and send it to the Republican-led Senate, which is expected to take several weeks to act.
Republicans have been divided over the bill, raising questions about whether they can muster the unity needed to pass it despite uniform opposition from Democrats.
After a false start in a congressional committee last week, the legislation passed another panel after a marathon session that lasted nearly 22 hours. During that session, Democrats introduced more than 520 amendments in an unsuccessful attempt to change the proposed legislation.
Democrats later sought to delay consideration of the bill on the House floor with a series of failed motions that questioned the validity of the process.
