BYD "challenges" European rivals - Chinese company introduces new

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD unveiled the low-cost Dolphin Surf, its 10th model available in Europe. The Berlin event increases pressure on European rivals to produce more affordable alternatives, with cost still a major obstacle to expanding the domestic market.

By the end of June, the versions will be available at an offer price of 19,990-24,990 euros, BYD's head of sales announced.

Only a small number of models, like the Dacia Spring or Leapmotor's T03, are on sale in Europe for under 20,000 euros, although 11 new cars priced under 25,000 euros will be launched this year, including the Renault R5, Fiat Grand Panda and Hyundai Inster.

"The compact car segment is the next frontier for electrification in Europe. We think this market has great potential," BYD sources in Berlin said.

The Chinese version of the vehicle, the Seagull, has fueled BYD's exponential growth in China, second only to Tesla's Model Y in total sales in 2024 with over 442,000 registrations.

Globally, sales of the model have risen 45% this year to 170,000. BYD, which last year overtook Tesla to become the world's largest electric vehicle maker, is reorganizing its European operations, expanding its dealer network and offering more hybrid versions.

The data shows that the reorganization is working. In Germany, 2,791 sales were made in the first four months of the year, quickly approaching 2,891 vehicles registered for the whole of 2024.

This success is mirrored across Europe, where sales quadrupled in the first quarter to 37,201 cars, in stark contrast to Tesla's sales, which fell 37.2%.
