Albania-EU, V Intergovernmental Conference held in Brussels - Progress of negotiations, 'Competitiveness' group chapter opens
The fifth Albania-European Union Intergovernmental Conference will be held in Brussels this Thursday. The Albanian delegation will be led by the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani. The meeting will serve to open the third group chapter in the negotiation process dealing with "Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth".
This third grouping represents eight areas of negotiation, which are:
- Chapter 10 (Digital Transformation and Media)
- Chapter 16 (Taxes)
- Chapter 17 (Economic and Monetary Policy)
- Chapter 19 (Social Policy and Employment)
- Chapter 20 (Enterprises and Industrial Policy)
- Chapter 25 (Science and Research)
- Chapter 26 (Education and Culture)
- Chapter 29 (Customs Union)
Progress in these areas is essential to guarantee Albania's fiscal stability, industrial modernization, increased innovation, improved working conditions, and participation in European initiatives in scientific research, education, and digitalization.
This is the fourth group of chapters to be opened in the negotiation process. The first, core group was opened on 15 October 2024, the sixth Group on External Relations was opened on 17 December 2024, while the second Group, Internal Market, was opened on 14 April 2025, during the fourth intergovernmental conference held in Luxembourg.
The accelerated pace of the negotiation process reflects both Albania's commitment to reforms and the EU's renewed emphasis on enlargement as a strategic priority.
The successful conclusion of the negotiations is expected to bring significant improvements in the lives of Albanian citizens, such as simpler and more transparent public services, fairer tax policies geared towards becoming part of the EU single market.
