Tariffs "shock" Volkswagen/ The European giant reports 1.3 billion

Volkswagen reported a loss of 1.3 billion euros in the first half of the year, hit by the Trump administration's trade tariffs. The company also lowered its full-year sales and profit forecasts.

European carmakers have suffered billions of euros in losses and warned of falling profits as they face trade tariffs, growing competition from China and domestic regulations that accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.

Volkswagen now forecasts an operating profit margin of 4%-5% for this year, compared with previous figures of 5.5%-6.5%, Europe's largest car company said, giving for the first time a clear assessment of the impact of the tariffs, along with quarterly results.

Sales for the full year are expected to be at the same levels as last year, unlike the previous forecast for an increase of up to 5%.

The tariffs alone cost the company 1.3 billion euros in the first six months of 2025, according to a Volkswagen statement. The German giant's shares fell 3.5% on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange after the release of quarterly results and the reduction in forecasts.
