"Tariffs, no exceptions" - Trump's new tariffs on aluminum and

US President Donald Trump sharply increased tariffs on steel and aluminium imports to a level of 25% "without exceptions", in a move he hopes will help struggling industries in the United States.

Trump signed proclamations raising the U.S. tariff rate on aluminum to 25% from the previous 10% rate, eliminating country exemptions and quota agreements, as well as hundreds of thousands of product-specific tariff exemptions for the two metals. A White House official confirmed that the measures will take effect on March 4.

The tariffs will apply to millions of tons of steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and other countries that had entered the United States duty-free. Trump later said he would consider Australia's request for an exemption from the steel tariffs, due to that country's trade deficit with the United States.

The announcements were extensions of Trump's 2018 Section 232 tariffs to protect domestic steel and aluminum producers on national security grounds. A White House official said the exemptions had eroded the effectiveness of those measures.

Trump will also impose a new North American standard requiring steel and aluminum imports to be "melted and processed" within the region to curb U.S. imports of minimally processed Chinese and Russian metals that evade other tariffs.

U.S. data showed that aluminum smelters produced just 670,000 tons of the metal last year, down from 3.7 million in 2000. Plant closures in recent years, including in Kentucky and Missouri, have left the country largely dependent on foreign imports.

Steel imports accounted for about 23% of US steel consumption in 2023, with Canada, Brazil and Mexico being the largest suppliers.
