US, tariffs on drugs and trucks - Measures aim to protect domestic producers

President Donald Trump has announced a new round of punitive tariffs on a wide range of imported goods, saying the US will impose 100% tariffs on pharmaceuticals, 25% taxes on heavy trucks and 50% on kitchen furniture.

During his second term, Trump has launched several national security investigations aimed at imposing new tariffs on various products, creating uncertainty in the global economy and blocking business decision-making.

He also said that starting next week, a 50% tariff will be imposed on bathroom fixtures and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, with all new measures coming into effect on October 1.

The new 100% tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product will apply to all imports unless the company has already begun building a manufacturing plant in the United States, Trump said.

He added that the new measures for heavy trucks are intended to protect domestic manufacturers from "unfair competition from abroad" and that companies such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Freightliner will benefit from this move.

The new tariffs on kitchens, bathrooms and some types of furniture were imposed by Trump because of the very high levels of imports that, according to him, are hurting domestic manufacturers. “The reason for this is the large-scale ‘flooding’ of these products into the United States from other countries,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The American Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association has spoken out against new tariffs on drugs, saying earlier this year that 53% of the $85.6 billion worth of drug ingredients used in the US are produced domestically, with the rest coming from Europe and other allies.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has urged the Department not to impose new tariffs on trucks, noting that the top five exporting countries for these vehicles are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany and Finland, all close U.S. allies or partners that pose no threat to national security. Mexico is the largest exporter of medium and heavy-duty trucks to the U.S. A study published in January showed that imports of these vehicles from Mexico have tripled since 2019.
