Sakhalin-3 to begin operations in 2028 - Russia's new gas project that will

Russia is expected to start producing natural gas at the new Sakhalin-3 project in the Pacific Ocean in 2028 to supply gas to China and for domestic needs.

Energy giant Gazprom and regional authorities are working on a plan to build a refinery in southern Sakhalin to produce jet fuel and diesel from gas condensate.

Russia has diversified its oil and gas exports, a key source of its budget revenue, away from Europe to Asia as a result of a crisis in relations with the West over the conflict in Ukraine.

One of the pipelines from Russia to China, designed to transport gas via the Far East route from Sakhalin, is expected to begin gas supplies in 2027 and eventually export 12 billion cubic meters of gas per year, up from the 10 billion cubic meters originally planned.

"We link the industry's prospects with the implementation of the Sakhalin-3 project. Its launch is planned for 2028. This gas is expected to be exported to China and also used for the needs of the Far East," the region's governor was quoted as saying.

Sakhalin-3 includes the Yuzhno-Kirinskoye field, which the United States placed under sanctions in 2015 over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis.

The field, part of the Kirinsky block in the Sea of Okhotsk, also contains oil, while the sanctions relate to the exploration or production of oil or gas in Russian deep waters.

According to Gazprom data, Yuzhno-Kirinskoye's reserves amount to 711.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas, 111.5 million tons of gas condensate and 4.1 million tons of oil.
