"US, part of security guarantees" - Trump assures Zelenskyy of US

As the world held its breath for the Donald Trump-Volodymyr Zelenskyy summit in the Oval Office, with EU leaders watching from behind closed doors, the two presidents radically changed the script of the dramatic summit. They focused on the historic significance and their determination to mend relations.

"Significant progress is being made," declared US President Donald Trump as he welcomed his Ukrainian counterpart to the White House, stressing for the first time that the US could intervene with security guarantees for Ukraine.

“Europe is the first line of defense,” Trump said, “but we will help, we will be involved,” not ruling out the idea of sending American peacekeepers to Ukraine. After the bilateral meeting, they joined seven European leaders invited to Washington along with Zelenskyy to show Europe’s joint support for Ukraine. Trump said that “European countries will bear the brunt. We will help them and we will make everything very safe.” He added that one of the points to be discussed with the leaders in Washington was “division of tasks.”

Zelenskyy commented that the security guarantees were part of a “very good conversation.” “We talked about very sensitive topics. The first is security guarantees … Security in Ukraine depends on the United States, as well as on European leaders,” the Ukrainian President emphasized. Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed that the Kremlin would accept security guarantees for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Moscow responded with a statement saying it would not accept scenarios involving the deployment of troops by NATO members in Ukraine. “This could lead to an uncontrollable escalation of the conflict with unpredictable consequences,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

The US president reiterated that the next step would be a conversation with Putin after discussions with Zelenskyy and European leaders are completed. The Ukrainian leader added that he was ready for a trilateral meeting with the Russian president and Trump. In the past, Zelenskyy has consistently requested a direct meeting with Putin, but Moscow has rejected it every time, even when he went to Turkey and called for a face-to-face conversation with the Russian leader.

Trump stressed that he hopes a trilateral meeting can be held as soon as possible, and that then the issue of territories could also be discussed.
