US and Iran resume military strikes - Oil prices traded nearly 2% higher

Oil prices traded nearly 2% higher on Monday after the US attacked an Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran retaliated, as the conflict stretched into its sixth month. Brent crude futures rose 2% to $89.87 a barrel, while U.S. crude traded at $84.85.
US forces struck two missile launch systems on Iran's Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran attacked two US air bases in Jordan.
US President Donald Trump said in a brief social media post on Sunday that Iran's energy hub, Kharg Island, was being "blown to pieces," but there was no evidence the island was under attack. Iran denied the attack on the island, adding that oil operations continued.
Negotiations to end the conflict are deadlocked as mediators work to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil passed before the war began in late February.
The number of visible cargo ships sailing through the strait fell to five a day over the weekend, shipping data showed on Monday, reflecting caution among companies wary of attacks on ships. The UK's Merchant Marine Operations reported that a tanker was hit by a shell while sailing through the strait.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US could impose new sanctions on Iran every week.
