Meloni, ready to set a record - On Friday, her government becomes the

Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to reach a historic milestone on Friday (September 4), when her government becomes the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic after 1,413 days in office, surpassing Silvio Berlusconi's second administration.

This record is notable in a country known for short-lived governments and shifting coalitions, giving Meloni a new argument ahead of Italy's next elections in 2027, when she will seek a second term.

"Italy has had 68 governments in the last 80 years, about one a year," said Reuters correspondent Crispian Balmer. "This time, Meloni has managed to survive three, four years and there is a good chance that she will see out her five-year term."

While Rome has experienced a remarkably stable period, several European countries once seen as politically strong have seen a steady stream of prime ministers, all of whom have faced Meloni. Although many European capitals were wary of her nationalist credentials when she came to power, the prime minister has pursued a pragmatic approach, working closely with EU partners and calming financial markets.

She has also presented herself as a bridge between Europe and the United States, promoting what she calls “the unity of the West.” However, this strategy has not always yielded results, and in recent months she has been embroiled in a feud with US President Donald Trump, despite the ideological closeness of the two leaders.

Domestically, critics argue that Meloni's longevity has not translated into major reforms. Some of her key proposals have stalled in parliament, been struck down by the courts or failed to win public support at the ballot box.

However, Meloni is banking heavily on the record he is expected to achieve on Friday, when he will surpass the late Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, under whom he served as youth minister from 2008 to 2011.
