No deal reached on Ukraine - Trump-Putin summit ends without concrete results

The long-awaited summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to produce any agreement on resolving or stopping the war in Ukraine. However, the leaders described their meeting as "productive".

After a nearly three-hour meeting in Alaska, the two leaders explained to the media that they had made "progress on certain issues," but declined to answer questions about these topics.

The talks produced no concrete steps toward a ceasefire in Ukraine, Europe's deadliest conflict in 80 years, a goal Trump had set before the summit. The meeting represented a diplomatic success for Putin, who had been isolated from Western leaders since the war began in 2022.

Trump further suggested that a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy would be organized soon, in which he himself could participate. Putin did not confirm this and said that he hopes that Ukraine and its allies will accept the results of the negotiations constructively, without interfering with the "progress that is taking place." He also reinforced the view that only eliminating the "root causes" of the conflict will enable a lasting peace.

Trump said they had discussed territorial swaps and security guarantees for Ukraine, noting that they had “agreed on most of it.” He added: “We’re very close to a deal, but Ukraine has to have the final say. They might refuse.” When asked what advice he would give Zelenskiy, Trump replied curtly: “You have to make a deal. Russia is a great power, and Ukraine is not.”

At the end of the meeting, Putin said with a smile: "See you next time in Moscow." The American president humorously acknowledged that he might face criticism for this, but said that "it's something that could happen."
