No consensus reached on anti-plastic treaty/ Talks in Geneva end without success. US leads the opposing side
No consensus was reached during talks in Geneva on the world's first legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution, according to delegates present.
South Africa's delegate stated at the closing session of the negotiations that his country is disappointed that the session failed to adopt a binding treaty and that positions between countries remain very far apart.
More than 1,000 delegates gathered in Geneva for the sixth round of talks, after the previous meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee in South Korea late last year ended without an agreement.
This committee was established by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in 2022 with the mandate to develop a legally binding global treaty aimed at banning plastic pollution.
Negotiations were extended until August 14 as the countries tried to overcome major differences over possible restrictions to be imposed in the future.
Diplomats and climate activists have warned that efforts by the European Union and small island states to set a production limit on plastics derived from oil, coal and gas are at risk. The efforts are facing strong opposition from petrochemical-producing countries and the United States.
Among the most divisive issues during the talks were setting a limit on plastic production, managing problematic plastic products and chemicals, and funding to help developing countries implement the treaty.
