Safest cities in Europe: "Pearl of the Adriatic" tops the list. Eastern Europe dominates
Various factors such as activities, weather and budget are usually decisive when choosing a vacation, but safety is also an essential aspect to enjoy the trip. Dubrovnik has been declared the safest city in Europe, according to a new study by tour operator Riviera Travel.
The Safest Destinations Index rates European cities based on crime growth over the past five years and current levels, to create an overall score. The lower the score, the safer the destination is considered.
"Data shows that Europe offers not only extraordinary culture and beauty, but also unparalleled safety," say sources from Riviera Travel.
Dubrovnik, one of the most visited places in Croatia, received a score of 44.1 points. Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its fortified old town and superbly preserved medieval architecture. Although it is one of the most popular holiday destinations, the current crime rate is very low. Dubrovnik also has a strong sense of community and is welcoming to tourists.
In second place is Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, with a safety score of 55.8 points. Crime is at very low levels and the country is known for its medieval old town, also part of UNESCO. The use of English in the service sector makes it easier for tourists to seek help and directions. Efficient public services and a digital government system add to the feeling of security.
Warsaw, the capital of Poland, ranks third with a safety score of 60.2. Although there has been a moderate increase in crime in the last five years, the current level remains very low. Prague holds fourth place with a score of 60.9, while Krakow closes the top five with 64.3 points. Meanwhile, in sixth place we find Amsterdam, with a moderate increase in crime in the last five years.
