Mysterious Chinese AI model worries developers - Is this the latest success of

A powerful artificial intelligence model that appeared anonymously on a developer platform last week has sparked speculation that Chinese startup DeepSeek may be quietly testing its next-generation system ahead of an official launch.

The free model, called Hunter Alpha, which appeared on the OpenRouter AI gateway platform on March 11, was described by the platform as a “secret model.” But Hunter Alpha described itself as “a Chinese AI model trained primarily in Chinese,” without agreeing to identify its developer.

Neither DeepSeek nor OpenRouter have identified the model’s creator. Hunter Alpha’s profile page describes it as a 1 trillion parameter model, meaning it was trained using roughly a trillion adjustable values that determine how the system processes language and generates responses. This specification echoes expectations in local media for DeepSeek’s next-generation V4 model, which Chinese media have reported could launch as early as April. DeepSeek, like many of its Chinese competitors, is well-funded, though it has an unusual structure given that its parent company is a hedge fund rather than a technology conglomerate.

The Hunter Alpha's memory rate and capacity also match the specifications that have circulated for DeepSeek V4.

Anonymous model mining is not uncommon, as platforms like OpenRouter allow developers to submit dozens of AI models through a single interface, making them a popular testing ground for new systems. A notice on Hunter Alpha's profile page says that all requests and additions to the model "are logged by the provider and may be used to improve it," underscoring the industry-wide practice of anonymous model mining for unbiased feedback.
