Chinese goods "invade" Germany - Shipments from Beijing double

Chinese goods are shifting significantly towards Germany as tariffs imposed by the US are affecting global trade flows, according to a study by the Institute for Employment Research.

In the first seven months of 2025, shipments from China to Germany increased by 10.5%, reaching 97.6 billion euros, while total imports increased by only 4.9% during the same period, reaching around 796.6 billion euros.

According to the analysis, which covers the period from October to June, the data shows a 91% expansion in copper imports from China, 24% in the clothing sector and 12% for toys, games and sports equipment.

"We are not yet faced with a general wave of Chinese goods. However, there are some product categories where the effects are visible," experts explain.

As a result of US tariffs on Chinese goods, consultancy Aevean reported that in May 2025, the value of Chinese electronics shipments to the US shrank by 43% compared to the same month last year. As a result, many Chinese manufacturers are reorienting their goods towards Europe, which could be good news for German consumers.

“Goods can be purchased cheaper due to increased supply from products that are no longer being sold in the US. Domestic consumers benefit from this as they pay less,” the analysts explain.

However, the study's authors warn that rising imports from China could increase price competition in Germany and reduce profits, especially in sectors where Chinese manufacturers have lower structural costs.
