China "prepares the ground" for humanoid robots / New models perform

China's humanoid robots are quickly becoming adept at household chores, as engineers equip them with the dexterity and intelligence to handle general tasks as well as care for the elderly.

Among the main contenders in this sector is Hubei Optics. Its robot, Lumen, has already mastered many skills, including serving drinks, folding clothes and making beds. After its debut earlier this month, the model has attracted potential customers with its agility and exceptional posture control.

"In terms of hardware, its movement boasts 40 degrees of freedom, and you can see the finger joints on its hands. Such dexterous hands are essential for performing complex operations. On the software side, we train the robot using a general-purpose intelligence model. Although it may seem somewhat slow in executing tasks now, as the volume of data increases and is repeated, it will become smarter and perform much better," said the data operations manager at Hubei Optics.

Researchers are training and updating Lumen at the Hubei Humanoid Robot Innovation Center to make it more suitable for homes, supermarkets, factories and other scenarios.

Robotics companies are looking to get to market as quickly as possible, but analysts say research on robot safety certification and the ethics of science and technology is needed before robots enter homes and communities.

Despite the obstacles, China's push to develop artificial intelligence and robotics for elderly care is already yielding impressive results. In northern China's Hebei Province, researchers have developed a humanoid robot that can extend its arms to safely lift an individual from a bed and transfer them to a wheelchair. "We are working with hospitals and nursing homes to realize the specific application in different scenarios. We are improving its functions as we promote the robot to the market," said a researcher of intelligent rehabilitation devices.
