Israel and Iran continue attacks on each other - UN, emergency meeting. Calls

Israel and Iran continued to attack each other with missiles and aircraft overnight, into Saturday morning, with sirens heard across Israel, including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, as citizens were urged to seek shelter.

At least three people were killed in Israel and dozens more were injured. Official Tehran said attacks against Israel would continue, while the targets would also expand to US bases in the region, Reuters reported, citing comments made by senior Iranian military officials to Iran's Fars news agency. Meanwhile, drones, missiles and fighter jets could be heard in Tehran, as Iran activated its air defenses.

The U.S. military is helping Israel shoot down Iranian missiles and shells, U.S. officials said. The Pentagon had recently moved military assets to the region ahead of Israel's initial attack. The assets include U.S. Navy destroyers that were positioned off the coast of Israel to thwart Iranian air strikes. The United States also deployed ground-based interceptors, including THAAD and Patriot.

Washington has insisted that the US military was not involved in Israel's "unilateral action". But President Donald Trump told the Wall Street Journal that the US was aware of Tel Aviv's plan. Meanwhile, the Iranian Tasnim news agency reported a fire at Tehran's Mehrabad International Airport, without giving further details.

Israel's ongoing attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities have killed 78 people and wounded more than 320, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said. The attacks killed generals and scientists, but the ambassador told the UN Security Council that most of the victims were civilians.

The ambassador spoke shortly after the first salvo of long-range missiles fired from Iran targeted Tel Aviv, injuring at least 34 people, according to the Israeli medical service. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Israel and Iran to stop attacking each other and called for a diplomatic solution.
