Israel joins "Peace Board" - Trump seeks international peace, as experts criticize

Israel joins "Peace Board" - Trump seeks international peace, as
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his country has joined the "Peace Board" initiative created by US President Donald Trump. The participation was agreed during Netanyahu's visit to Washington where he met with President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A UN Security Council resolution, adopted last year, authorized the board and the countries working with it to create an international stabilization force in Gaza, where a fragile ceasefire began in October under Trump's plan, which was signed by Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, respectively.

Under the White House plan for Gaza, the board was intended to oversee its interim government. The US president also said that with him as chairman, Gaza would be protected from global conflicts.

Many human rights experts say Trump's oversight of a board resembles a colonial structure. Israel's presence on the board is expected to bring further criticism since the state of Palestine is not a participant.

The Gaza ceasefire has been repeatedly violated, with at least 580 Palestinians and four Israeli soldiers reported killed since it began in October, according to Palestinian and Israeli figures.

However, the next phase of Trump's Gaza plan requires resolving complex issues such as the disarmament of Hamas, which the group has long rejected, a further Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the deployment of an international peacekeeping force.
The board is set to hold its first meeting on February 19 in Washington to discuss rebuilding Gaza.
