Shkodër-Gjakovë Railway/ Construction begins/Kosovo, Kurti: This mandate. HSH: We aim within 2-3 years

The project to connect Albania with Kosovo by rail appears to be a focus of both governments. Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, during the presentation of the government program for the new mandate, listed it among the priorities of the four-year term.
"In the new mandate, we will begin the construction of the Gjakova - Shkodra railway line within the framework of the Pristina - Durrës railway line, and we will design the railway line connecting Prizren and Ferizaj with Gjilan and Bujanovac," Kurti said.
These deadlines seem to be in line with Albanian plans. "Considering the current pace of preparation of technical documentation, real construction could begin within the next 2-3 years, after the completion of the preliminary design and the international procurement process," Albanian Railways announced to TV SCAN a few months ago.
Currently, work is underway on the financing model, which is expected to be provided through a combination of instruments, including funding from various donors, as well as national contributions from Albania and Kosovo. The Albanian Railways considers this combined financing model, already successfully applied in other railway projects. According to the feasibility study, the costs for this railway segment are estimated at 1.8 billion euros. Around 1.7 billion euros are costs needed for construction, while the rest are estimated as costs for permits, expropriations, etc.
The railway line from Shkodra to Gjakova will have 7 stations, at a length of 105.8 km. The segment will contain 43 bridges and 14 tunnels, while the total length of the tunnels is 35.3 km.
According to Albanian Railways, the project is expected to last approximately 12 years from the start of design to full operation, while expectations are that this line will have a significant impact on both freight transport and passenger movement.
