Generation Z quality clothes on a low budget/ Shein, the Chinese retailer offers savings opportunities
Shein, the Chinese online fast-fashion retailer that went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this week, has built its success by luring young, budget-conscious consumers with extremely low prices and a wide variety.
But just because Shein's products are cheap doesn't mean they lack quality. Ushena Chukuka, a 29-year-old data analyst and part-time stylist based in Atlanta, says she's developed a "cheat code" for finding good quality at a low cost.
She's been shopping on the platform since high school and says the quality of the clothes has only gotten better. Over time, she's learned that "you can definitely find some good clothes."
Her vetting process is meticulous: she looks at the composition of the garments, their construction, and whether the garment has durability. She also relies heavily on reviews from other buyers, especially those with photos.
According to her, shopping at Shein has saved her thousands of dollars over the years and allowed her to redirect those savings towards other financial goals, such as buying her first home and traveling to favorite destinations.
Shein narrowly beat out Amazon as the online site where Gen Z clothing shoppers were most likely to make a purchase, according to a 2025 study by marketing agency Tinuiti. 12% of young people named Shein as their most likely site to buy clothes online.
Andrew Huynh, founder of financial planning firm Pink Planning, encourages young people to distinguish between cheap and good value. He also recommends setting aside a certain amount of spending money so that unexpected purchases don't deplete your savings.
His advice: Every dollar saved on fast fashion purchases can bring you closer to your other goals that really matter.
