Apple introduces new AI features - Reveals live translations and liquid glass technology
Apple announced several artificial intelligence features, including the underlying technology it uses for Apple Intelligence, in an update to its software and services.
Presentations at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference focused more on incremental developments, including "live" translations for phone calls and changes in operating system design that improve everyday life.
A year after failing to deliver promised AI-based improvements to key products like Siri, Apple kept its promises modestly, communicating that it could help consumers with tasks such as finding where to buy a jacket similar to one they saw online.
Leslie Ikemoto, one of the top leaders at Apple, demonstrated how the company's artificial intelligence will help close language gaps through real-time translations.
"With Apple Intelligence, live translation can be done instantly. It's integrated into Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls," Ikemoto said.
In another demonstration of how partners can improve Apple's apps, the company added image generation from OpenAI's ChatGPT to its Image Playground app, saying the data will not be shared with OpenAI without user permission.
Apple's redesign of its operating systems focused on a design it calls "liquid glass," where icons and menus are partially transparent, a move that Apple executives said was possible because of more powerful chips in Apple devices compared to a decade ago.
The presentation at the annual conference comes at a time when the company is facing a number of technical and regulatory challenges.
