Foreign tourists or Albanians, who spends more? The first quarter brings new records, revenues reach 874 million euros
Tourism in Albania has continued to be an important source of income during the first three months of 2025, marking another record compared to the same period in previous years. According to official data, in the first quarter of this year, foreign tourists spent 874.36 million euros in Albania, an increase of nearly 11% compared to the same period in 2024 and 40% more than in the same quarter of 2023. Compared to 2019, before the pandemic, spending has more than doubled, which clearly shows a steady rise in Albania's position on the tourist map.
At the same time, Albanians' spending abroad has also increased significantly, reflecting the trend of increasing travel abroad for tourist purposes. In the first quarter of 2025, Albanian citizens spent 579.04 million euros abroad, about 11% more than in the same period last year and 33% more than in the first quarter of 2023. This strong trend of going abroad for holidays has become increasingly visible year after year, bringing a new profile of the Albanian consumer who travels more frequently and with higher spending. We recall that in the first months of 2025, Albanians' trips abroad have been numerous, even exceeding the arrivals of foreign tourists in the country.
However, the net balance of tourism remains positive for the Albanian economy. The difference between the spending of foreign tourists in the country and that of Albanians abroad has reached 295.32 million euros, the highest level ever for a first quarter. This balance has always been increasing after the pandemic, reflecting not only the increase in inbound tourism, but also the strengthening of the Albanian tourist offer outside the summer season.
In this context, Albania is confirmed as a country that gains more from tourism than it spends on it, at least in terms of economic balance. While more and more Albanians are choosing to travel abroad. On the other hand, the country is attracting tourists with a higher spending profile and for longer periods, which translates into a positive and distributed impact on the economy.
