Trump's plan to downsize administration - Offers employees 8 months of pay

US President Donald Trump has offered severance packages to federal employees who do not want to return to work, giving them eight months of pay. Trump aims to cut jobs in the administration, saving the government up to $100 billion.

United States President Donald Trump has offered severance packages to nearly all federal employees who do not want to return to office, a move aimed at shrinking the US government.

In an email sent to millions of employees on Tuesday, his administration told workers they had until Feb. 6 to decide if they wanted to be part of a “deferred severance program.” If they agree to leave their jobs by that date, they would receive about eight months of pay.

The Trump administration expects up to 10% of employees to accept the offer, or about 200,000 out of the more than two million the federal government employs, according to CBS News.

Senior Trump officials told US media that the purchases could save the government up to $100 billion.

Workers who wanted to take the deal were asked to reply to the email with the word “resign.” The offer includes pay and benefits for them through Sept. 30.

Trump has announced that federal employees who had been working remotely since the Covid pandemic will return to the office five days a week. During the campaign, the US president pledged to cut federal administration and spending.

He tasked Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy with leading an advisory body focused on cutting regulations, spending, and the number of employees within the government.
