Why did Deepseek shake up the AI market? - The platform offers free and unlimited services to users
Chinese startup DeepSeek is challenging the dominance of companies like OpenAI and Google by offering a cheaper, more user-friendly artificial intelligence model. The platform's team is made up of young graduates from top Chinese universities.
The latest artificial intelligence model from Chinese startup DeepSeek is threatening to disrupt the global tech order. The platform is challenging the dominance of giants like OpenAI, Google and Meta, sending chipmaker Nvidia shares plummeting.
The company has attracted attention after claiming last month that training DeepSeek-V3 required less than $6 million in power from Nvidia H800 chips. The DeepSeek-R1 version, launched last week, is 20 to 50 times cheaper to run than OpenAI's o1 model, depending on the task.
By operating independently, DeepSeek's funding model allows it to pursue ambitious artificial intelligence projects without pressure from outside investors and prioritize long-term research and development.
The team is made up of young graduates from China's top universities, with a recruitment process that prioritizes technical skills over work experience.
One of the main reasons DeepSeek has attracted attention is that it operates free of charge for users. This is the first such system available for free. Other powerful systems such as OpenAI o1 and Claude Sonnet require a paid subscription. Also, some subscriptions impose quotas on users.
Google Gemini is also available for free, but those versions are limited to older models. DeepSeek has not imposed any restrictions at the moment.
The models, including DeepSeek-R1, are open source. This means anyone can access the platform's code and use it to customize the language model. OpenAI, on the other hand, has the o1 model closed-source and is selling it only to users, with packages ranging from $20 to $200 per month.
