US Defense, Trump Introduces "Golden Dome" - The USD 175 Billion

White House President Donald Trump has announced a $175 billion space defense project, dubbed “Golden Dome.” The system aims to protect the United States from air attacks by other countries.

US President Donald Trump said he had selected a design for a $175 billion missile defense shield, dubbed "Golden Dome," and named a Space Force general to lead the ambitious program aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia.

The program, first ordered by Trump in January, aims to create a network of satellites to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming missiles.

The US leader said at a White House press conference that US Space Force General Michael Guetlein would be the lead program manager for an effort widely seen as the cornerstone of the new administration's military planning.

The Golden Dome will "protect our homeland," Trump said. According to him, Canada had expressed its desire to be part of it.

In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said he and his ministers were discussing a new security and economic relationship with their American counterparts.

"These discussions naturally include strengthening NORAD and related initiatives such as the Golden Dome," the statement said.

Trump said the protective shield, which would cost about $175 billion, should be operational by the end of his term in January 2029, but industry experts are unsure of that timeline and the associated cost.

"Ronald Reagan wanted it many years ago, but they didn't have the technology," Trump said, referring to the space-based missile defense system proposed by former President Reagan.
