Old cars "parade" on the roads of Albania - DPSHTRR: January-April 2025, over 21 thousand vehicles failed technical inspection
The General Directorate of Road Transport Services has published data for the period January-April 2025 regarding the technical inspection service of vehicles in circulation. During this period, 81,199 vehicles were tested, of which 87.05% of the tested vehicles are 4+1 to 8+1 seat vehicles;
Meanwhile, according to figures published by the DPSHTRR, 21,904 vehicles have remained in testing or 27% of the total vehicles, raising concerns about the technical condition of vehicles in circulation. Mainly, the reasons for the delay are related to visual and functional deficiencies 35%; problems with the exhaust system 33%; defects in the steering system 13% and defects in the braking system 19%.
On the other hand, the majority of the checks, 36%, were carried out at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Road Transport Services in Tirana, reflecting the higher flow and concentration of vehicles in the capital. Meanwhile, the lowest number of vehicles tested was in the Gjirokastra region, with 1,552 vehicles subjected to technical inspection.
Another important element that is noted is the age of vehicles in circulation. During the period January-April 2025, 2,541 vehicles with an average age of 22 years were permanently deregistered. This indicator shows the necessity for the renewal of the road fleet in the country.
The General Directorate of Road Transport Services also emphasizes that odometer tampering, constructive modifications and any other manipulation are strictly prohibited, as these practices are a threat to road safety.
Citizens can also make reservations for technical inspections through the e-Albania portal.
