North Macedonia selected by Britain - Bilateral agreement secures 6 billion

North Macedonia has signed a strategic agreement with the United Kingdom that includes investments of around 6 billion euros. These investments will be distributed across the infrastructure, health, energy and transport sectors.

The Macedonian government says the agreement with the United Kingdom will transform the country and add value to the quality of life of citizens and the economy in general.

"Firstly, the agreement has strategic and political importance and this kind of strategic partnership will restore the dignity of the state and pave the way for stability, security and development. Secondly, in economic terms there is a framework that provides us with about 6 billion euros, or about 5 billion pounds. Two groups of projects have already been agreed. One is the reconstruction, modernization and construction of another track on the railway that is part of Corridor 10.

The second group of projects includes healthcare, completing the clinical center in Shtip, along with a medical faculty and a 200-bed student dormitory. The completion of the hospital in Kicevo and the reconstruction of the clinical hospital in Tetovo are in focus. The agreement also includes projects in the energy sector and transport projects,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Finance announced that of the six billion euros in the financial framework with the United Kingdom, 2.2 billion euros will be allocated for railway infrastructure and investments in healthcare.

Meanwhile, the British Embassy in the Republic of Macedonia emphasized that about half of Britain's investments in the entire Western Balkans have been made in Macedonia.

"This is part of the agreement to accelerate and deepen the already established economic and trade partnership. We as the United Kingdom are a free-trading nation and we believe this will give momentum to the country's development," the embassy statement said.
