US energy consumption heading for record levels - AI and cryptocurrencies will

The United States is expected to record electricity consumption levels during 2025 and 2026, according to a report published by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

According to the data, electricity consumption in the US will reach 4.186 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2025 and 4.284 billion kWh in 2026. These figures represent significant increases compared to the current record of 4.097 billion kWh set in 2024.

The increase in energy demand is partly driven by the expansion of data centers supporting artificial intelligence technology and cryptocurrencies, as well as a shift by households and businesses towards using electricity for heating and transportation, rather than fossil fuels.

The administration projects that electricity sales in 2025 will reach 1.515 billion kWh for residential customers, 1.476 billion kWh for the commercial sector, and 1.051 billion kWh for industry. These figures are compared to previous years' records for each sector.

The report also says that the share of natural gas in power generation will fall from 42% in 2024 to 40% in 2025 and 2026. Meanwhile, coal use will increase from 16% in 2024 to 17% in 2025, but then decrease again the following year, due to high generation from renewable sources.

This production is expected to expand from 23% in 2024, to 24% this year and to 26% in 2026. Meanwhile, the share of nuclear energy in total production will experience a slight decline, from 19% in 2024 to 18% in the same period.
