The US economy is growing significantly - GDP expanded by 3.8% in the second quarter of 2025
The United States economy grew by 3.8% from April to June, according to a government report that represents a significant improvement on the previous estimate for growth in the second quarter.
Gross domestic product (GDP), the overall measure of goods and services produced domestically, rebounded in the spring after a 0.6% decline in the first quarter, largely due to the fallout from President Donald Trump's trade wars, the Commerce Department said. The department had previously estimated second-quarter growth at 3.3%.
The first-quarter decline in gross domestic product, the first in three years, was largely due to a surge in imports, which are deducted from GDP, as businesses rushed to bring in foreign goods before Trump imposed new tariffs on them. That trend reversed in the second quarter, as expected. Imports shrank 29.3%, adding more than 5 percentage points to economic growth from April to June. Consumer spending rose 2.5%, compared with just 0.6% in the first quarter and significantly higher than the previous estimate of 1.6%.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has overturned decades of American policies that supported free trade. He has imposed tariffs on imports from almost every country in the world and has also targeted specific products such as steel, aluminum and cars.
The American leader sees the tariffs as a way to protect American industry, bring factories back to the US and help finance the big tax cut he signed on July 4.
But traditional economists say tariffs will hurt the economy, raising costs and making protected companies less efficient. They point out that these duties are paid by importers in the US, who try to pass the costs on to consumers through higher prices.
