Greek Prime Minister Meets with Protesting Farmers - "Road and Border Blockades Cannot Be Tolerated"

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held talks with some farmers' representatives for the first time after weeks of protests over delays in agricultural aid and an EU-Mercosur trade deal.
"From the very beginning, the government has shown great tolerance towards the farmers' protests, recognizing the major problems and therefore responding to many of their demands," he said after meeting with a 21-member delegation of farmers.
However, many other farmers refused to participate in the talks.
Mitsotakis' center-right government, under fire over a corruption scandal over agricultural aid, offered farmers additional cuts in fuel taxes, electricity costs and compensation for livestock farmers in an effort to ease tensions after farmers blocked major highways and border crossings for weeks, disrupting travel and hitting some businesses.
Government officials have said the talks aim to provide solutions to some 600,000 farmers, herders, fishermen and beekeepers. However, the prime minister added that after 45 days of protests, road and border blockades cannot be tolerated.
As the meeting was taking place, farmers who refused to attend the meeting staged road and border blockades in protest, saying that the delegation did not cover all agricultural sectors and that the government was not sincere in addressing farmers' problems.
According to them, one of the main problems besides production costs and EU payment delays was the Mercosur trade agreement, which they called the "gravestone of the agricultural sector."
