EU Commissioner for Enlargement in Albania - In focus, reforms and negotiations for EU membership
Marta Kos, the European Union's Commissioner for Enlargement, will visit Albania from March 12 to 14, marking her first official mission to the country.
This visit will serve as an opportunity to discuss with the Albanian authorities the state of play of the EU accession process, in particular progress in fundamental reforms and in the judiciary. The visit will also be an opportunity to convey the importance of consolidating achievements through further deliverables, in line with the merit-based nature of the process.
Among others, the Commissioner will meet with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Chief Negotiator Majlinda Dhuka and Speaker of Parliament Elisa Spiropali. She will also meet with Albanian independent justice institutions, representatives of the opposition, as well as civil society organisations.
Commissioner Kos will also address students of the College of Europe at the University of Tirana and will speak about the role of civil society and the engagement of young people in the EU's enlargement policy in the Western Balkans.
As part of her mission, Marta Kos will visit three EU-funded projects in Elbasan, where she will interact with social enterprises supported by confiscated assets of organized crime, meet with women victims of gender-based violence and discuss with young students who are part of the Western Balkans School Exchange Programme. This programme supports intercultural learning and dialogue between neighbouring countries.
A joint press conference with Prime Minister Rama is scheduled for March 13 at 10:10.
