Strengthening the position of Albanian women in politics and diplomacy/Gradual

The role of Albanian women in political, economic and social life is taking on increasingly visible dimensions, showing a gradual increase in representation in key institutions and sectors. The latest data for 2023–2024 according to the Institute of Statistics speaks of gender roles where each gender has more representation.

In the Albanian parliament, the level of women's representation during 2024 reached 35.7%, an indicator that brings Albania closer to European and regional standards. However, this progress was not reflected to the same extent in the 2023 local elections. Of the lists of candidates for mayor, only 10.4% were women, while at the end of the electoral process, only 13.1% of them managed to win.

Another important dimension of representation is diplomacy, where figures show a more visible gender balance. In 2024, 37.5% of Albanian ambassadors were women, while in the position of Minister Plenipotentiary they dominated with 66.7%.

Regarding the Armed Forces, women's participation continues to remain low. Only 15.4% of the Albanian army was composed of women in 2024, which indicates that the full integration of women into security and defense structures still requires increased efforts.

In the field of the economy, women are increasingly demonstrating their leadership role. The percentage of female owners or administrators is highest in small enterprises (with 1-4 employees), where they reach 32.6%. However, differences remain noticeable between sectors: in services, businesses run by women reach 33.6%, while in manufacturing only 18.0%.

Another positive indicator is related to the support that women are receiving from state programs. From the Albanian Investment Development Agency's schemes, 40.6% of beneficiaries have been women, testifying to a more inclusive approach to economic development policies.
