World's largest hydrogen reserve discovered - Deposit worth 92 billion USD, France tops energy market
The world's largest hydrogen reserve has been discovered in France. The discovery could transform the global energy market and give Paris a boost in the sector.
France discovered the world's largest reserve of 46 million tons of natural hydrogen worth $92 billion.
French scientists have found natural hydrogen underground in Folschviller, a region in the Moselle department. The discovery has the potential to transform the global energy market by providing a new source of carbon-free fuel and putting France at the forefront of the global energy revolution.
Scientists from the GeoRessources laboratory found this unexpected source while on a mission to find methane. But instead of methane, they found a large deposit of white hydrogen, 1,250 meters deep.
Unlike industrial production of green hydrogen, which relies on renewable energy, white hydrogen is found naturally in the ground. This means that it does not require energy-intensive processes for production, but can be accessed and used without any emissions.
According to scientists, it is estimated that 46 million tons of natural hydrogen would replace more than half of the world's annual production of gray hydrogen, but without the environmental costs. Experts point out that the deposit is worth about $92 billion, making it one of the largest energy discoveries in history.
The production of these natural resources would generate thousands of jobs, boost the local economy and increase France's energy security. By using natural hydrogen, France will be able to reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels, becoming a leading force in Europe's clean energy transition.
While hydrogen exists naturally, scientists need to develop efficient extraction methods to make it usable for energy production.
