Electric vehicle sales in Europe - Driven by high fuel prices

High fuel prices as a result of the war in Iran have boosted sales of new and used electric vehicles in Europe, giving a much-needed boost to the automotive industry.
Across Europe, data showed that new electric vehicle registrations rose 34% year-on-year in April. The data covers 16 markets that account for more than 80% of car sales in the European Union and the European Free Trade Association.
The figures show strong growth in electric vehicles in Denmark and the Netherlands, but also in markets such as Italy, where electric vehicles have been slow to take off.
Online marketplaces have also seen an increase in searches for new and used electric vehicles, with a marked increase for Chinese brands with their more affordable models.
Since the start of the war, demand for electric vehicles in the German market has increased to 75% from around 40% previously, while conventional gasoline-powered cars have fallen to 16% from 33%.
According to market analysts, the conflict in Iran has fundamentally reshaped the way people think about energy security in their daily lives. Europeans have moved from the 'maybe someday' idea to the 'now' idea of electric vehicles.
