Night train brings Europe closer - Aims to connect 100 cities by 2035
Sleeper trains are experiencing a renaissance in Europe, although some travelers are still put off by the idea of sharing a room with strangers.
While many overnight services offer cabins with one or two beds, they are usually an expensive option. But now, a new company is building night trains with completely private rooms, promising that tickets will cost no more than the price of a flight.
Nox, a Berlin-based startup, says its mission is to offer a real alternative to short-haul flights in Europe.
From 2027, the company plans to operate its first night trains across Europe with cabins designed for one or two passengers.
"Sleeping while a train takes you across Europe is a great concept. But today people have to share their cabins with strangers, the beds are cramped and it's often more expensive than air travel. We want to change that and make night trains an essential part of European travel," says one of Nox's founders.
They will have single-occupancy room categories with a bed, an armchair and a table, as well as rooms with a double bed, two armchairs and a table. The rooms will have two-meter-long beds and enough space to store luggage. Some cabins will also offer panoramic windows.
According to Nox, the room design allows them to fit more people on the trains, compared to traditional operators.
"This, coupled with a strict focus on standardization and operational excellence, will allow us to offer affordable fares on over 35 European routes," the company emphasizes.
The goal is to provide train connections between 100 European cities by 2035. These include Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Budapest and Rome.
Single rooms will start at 79 euros and double rooms at 149 euros. There will also be food and beverage service on board.
