The best city to live in the world is revealed - Which country has "knocked" Vienna off the top of the ranking?
After a three-year run at the top of the annual global list by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the Austrian capital of Vienna has been overtaken by Copenhagen. The Danish capital has taken the top spot in the ranking of the best places to live in 2025.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, a sister organization of The Economist magazine, ranked 173 cities around the world based on a number of factors, including healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure and environment.
Copenhagen triumphed after receiving "perfect" scores for stability, education and infrastructure, while Vienna came in second place, along with the Swiss city of Zurich.
Melbourne, Australia, held on to fourth place, while Geneva was fifth on the list.
Outside the top five, Sydney, Australia, rose from seventh to sixth place, while the Japanese city of Osaka and Auckland, New Zealand, tied for seventh place. In ninth place, Adelaide was the third Australian city to make the top 10, while Vancouver, Canada, took tenth place.
But why did Vienna fail to come out on top this year? The Austrian city scored well in most categories, except for a drop in stability. This drop came in the wake of recent incidents, including a bomb threat at a Taylor Swift concert last summer, which led to the event being canceled.
"Global liveability has remained unchanged over the past year, and as in 2024, stability scores have declined globally," the EIU's deputy director of industry said in a statement.
However, Vienna wasn't the only city to receive lower marks in a category where it had previously performed very well. Calgary, Canada, which ranked fifth in 2024, fell out of the top 10 this year, moving to 18th place. This change came as a result of lower scores in healthcare, along with three other Canadian cities. Toronto also ranked lower this year, falling from 12th to 16th.
Meanwhile, UK cities such as London, Manchester and Edinburgh also moved down the rankings after receiving lower scores in the stability category.
