Over 100 days with artificial heart! - An Australian man lived over 3 months

An Australian man with severe heart problems has become the first person in the world to survive more than 100 days with a completely artificial heart before being fitted with a donor heart, researchers and doctors announced.

The BiVACOR "Total Artificial Heart" was created by Australian scientist Dr. Daniel Timms and is the world's first device that can act as a complete replacement for the human heart, reproducing both sides of the organ.

The six-hour operation took place in late November 2024 at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital and the 40-year-old patient waited over 100 days for a donor heart while having the BiVACOR heart.

The "totally artificial heart" was designed as a bridge to keep patients alive until donor heart transplants become possible, but Timms' goal is for the artificial device to one day become a permanent solution.

St Vincent calls BiVACOR "a titanium device with a single moving part, no valves and a non-contact suspension system, designed to eliminate mechanical wear."

The patient was the sixth person in the world to receive the "artificial heart" and the first Australian to undergo the procedure and wait over 100 days for a donor heart.

He underwent surgery for a donor heart transplant this month and is in the process of recovering.
