History "meets" technology in Rome - The robot "ADRIANO" welcomes visitors to the Temple of Hadrian
ADRIANO, Rome's first robotic employee, has entered service at the iconic ancient Roman Temple of Hadrian and Vibia Sabina, welcoming tourists and providing information on Rome's history.
The robot is equipped with artificial intelligence and muscles that allow it to clasp hands and hold objects.
"If someone wants, for example, to hug the robot or shake its hand, it doesn't have the rigidity of an industrial robot that could harm a person," said robotics engineer at the Italian Institute of Technology, Giovanni Rosato.
ADRIANO can provide information in both Italian and English about the history of Rome, but he is still learning, while developers are working to add other languages to his software.
The robot, equipped with 36 sensors for recording information and self-localization, has humanoid features that allow it to express emotions through realistic facial expressions, enabling more natural and engaging communication with users.
Developers are working to create a remote visit to the Temple of Vibia Sabina and Hadrian through ADRIANO, offering a unique experience for those who cannot be physically present, but who will enjoy the experience through a visual device.
The initiative, which involved a team of over 30 people, is the result of an 18-month collaboration between the Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Italian Institute of Technology, the "Sapienza" University of Rome and QBRobotics.
"We want to preserve the greatness of Rome for another two thousand years," said the president of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, Lorenzo Tagliavanti. "ADRIANO helps us tell stories from two thousand years ago, projected into the years to come."
