Indians prefer Albania to work - Last year, 13,200 foreigners received residence permits
Albania is no longer just a tourist destination. It is increasingly becoming an attractive place for foreigners who choose to live here, whether for work, business, or even long-term living.
According to data from the Ministry of Interior, around 13,200 foreign nationals were granted residence permits last year. What stands out in the official report is the increase in the number of citizens from India, with 1,634 residence permits issued in 2024 alone, ranking second only to Italians.
India, as a third country, has been increasingly involved in importing labor to compensate for the lack of human resources in various sectors of the Albanian labor market.
According to data from the Labor Inspectorate, citizens from India, the Philippines, and Egypt make up the majority of foreign employment in Albania. These individuals are mainly engaged in sectors with a significant labor shortage, such as construction, services, and the manufacturing industry.
Meanwhile, Italians rank first in terms of the number of residence permits, with 2,156 people granted last year. For the most part, they are not involved in the labor market, but come to stay with long-term plans for vacation, retirement, or to develop a different lifestyle in Albania.
Currently, there are around 20,000 foreigners with valid residence permits in the country. Around 65% of them are involved in the labor market, while the rest stay for other reasons, including studies, family reunification or long-term tourism.
