1/5 of the global population affected by climate change - Report: 1.8 billion

According to the latest report, 1 in 5 people are affected by global climate change. The data shows that 1.8 billion individuals face extreme temperatures every day, which increase the risk to health.

The effects of human-caused climate change, according to a recently published report, are being felt by one in five people worldwide.

The report published by 'Climate Central', an independent scientific organization, found that at least 1.8 billion people, or 22 percent of the global population, faced daily temperatures significantly affected by climate change from December 2024 to February 2025.

Over the past three months, human-caused climate change, mainly from the burning of coal, oil and methane gas, has caused widespread extreme heat across most regions.

In the same period, almost 394 million people faced 30 days or more of "dangerous heat" intensified by climate change, with 74 percent of them residing in Africa.

"Dangerous heat" days are defined as days with temperatures exceeding 90 percent of local averages from 1991 to 2020, a factor that increases the risk of heat-related health problems.

According to the research, the highest global exposure occurred on February 28 when three billion people or 38 percent of the population experienced such temperatures.
