How Much Do We Spend on Alcohol and Tobacco? Education and Healthcare Take a Back Seat to “Vices”

The latest data on the average monthly expenses of Albanian families shows a significant picture of economic and social priorities. “Scan Intel” has analyzed the figures to understand how much Albanian families spend and how these expenses are divided? Of the total of 93 thousand lek per month, a significant part of the family budget continues to go to alcoholic beverages and tobacco, with 3,914 lek per month, much higher than what is dedicated to education or culture and entertainment.
In total, Albanian families, which number about 755,000 according to the Census, spend almost 3 billion lek per month, or 35 billion lek per year, on alcoholic beverages and tobacco. Converted, this figure results in about 350 million euros per year.
In contrast, only 3,081 lek per month is spent on education by a family, while even less, 2,460 lek, is spent on entertainment and culture. This shows that investment in the intellectual and cultural development of Albanian families remains limited, while spending on harmful habits such as smoking and alcohol continues to remain high.
Even health care expenses, at only 3,507 lekë per month, show a harsh reality, care for well-being remains at the minimum limits. Considering the costs of medicines and medical services, this amount is too low to meet real needs. This implies either a lack of access to quality health care, or a negligence of the families themselves to invest in their health.
