"Serbia will protect its oil interests" - Vučić: There will be no

Serbia will do everything possible to protect its interests in the face of United States sanctions against the oil company NIS, President Aleksandar Vučić stated.

The US announced sanctions in January on NIS, Serbia's largest oil importer and one of Russia's last energy assets in Europe, following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

However, a series of exemptions had delayed their implementation until last week, when the NIS declared that there would be no further postponements of the sanctions.

"Our Russian friends have understood the message. We have understood their interests. We will do everything, tactically and strategically, in the best interest of Serbia," Vučić said on social media.

“There will be no shortage of crude oil, its products or an energy crisis,” the Serbian president added. He did not specify what measures Serbia could take to ensure uninterrupted supplies of crude oil.

The US Treasury Department's decision forced the Croatian oil pipeline JANAF, which supplies the NIS refinery near Belgrade, to halt shipments.

Without these deliveries, the refinery, the only one in Serbia that processes about 80% of oil products, will find it difficult to function after November 1, Vučić declared last week.

On Monday, Slovenian company Petrol, which operates in Serbia, announced that it would no longer be supplied by NIS. Other foreign companies on the Serbian market, such as Eko from Greece and OMV from Austria, have been using their supply lines since April. Last week, the Hungarian foreign ministry said that the domestic oil company would increase deliveries to Serbia.
